George lived the majority of his life in Double Trouble Village, first working the cranberry industry and then as a caretaker following his fathers retirement in 1964. And, of course, being in the military and traveling with them, the government shipped all my stuff that I bought and picked upshipped it all back to America for me. I went around and I got it and shipped it all back home. Yes, but that was all the legal aspect of it. You got to get out. So we moved to Florida. George lived most of his life in Hubbard, Ohio, and was a 1963 graduate of Ursuline High School in Youngstown. And Ill invest in a couple of other things that will give me a nice little income, and I wont have to worry about it. It was unbelievably gorgeous. Q: Yes, you can tell me about your early life and the memories you have of growing up here. And even though the house belongs, in essence, to Historic House Trust, they werent reimbursing him for anything. So I would walk around, Id look and Id see some beautiful stuff for sale, for nothing. Big fluted columns with big Corinthian capitals on them. We were only allowed so much. So a lot of the things that you acquired to furnish the house were in poor condition, and then you have them reupholstered and restored. Burke: Anyway, she was well known here on Staten Island. And there were two windows, like this. Sell the other half to Billthat was my brother and you and George, move with me to Florida. So we all thought that was a great idea. Then she got to the point where she couldnt keep it anymore. I bought another restaurant, didnt I? So I picked up this one building that had a little old bar next to it. She said shell keep the doors locked and call Linda if anybody wants to get in and take anything out. This the expensive piece of property! They sold it to the developers. And the porch, I dont thinkone end of it, you wouldnt dare walk on because the whole thing would have collapsed. Because I certainlyI never passed up a bargain. "You're always looking at doing whatever helps your team," he said. So thank you. But down here, all the beautiful homes that were down here are gone. I dont know if it ever took off. The mayor and everybody else in the cityyou cant ride on the beach. Burke: Oh, and then the house, when I bought it, everybodythe real estate lady, she wouldnt come in. My sisterher mother [indicates Daller], Francesmy sister living in the Bronx, she got me a little apartment and she got me a job working for Saks Fifth Avenue. Burke: I went and I was stationed in England, and I loved being in England. Still kept it. This was the farmhouse. Burke: Well, look at the mansion! But the one that I remember was a great big brooch. Ill give you a job. Of course, nothings there. And it did all the dental workany kind of dental work and everything was manufactured there. And I want my painting. And I just got a call from all my lady friends saying that my house is falling apart. George then worked for the State Park Service from 1977 until his retirement in 2006, living most of that time in a converted pickers cottage in the village. But, God, that was almost 100 years ago, you know? Daller: I mean, that big wrap-around porch that went all the way around the house. Daller: And he uses every room, he doesnt sit in one room. Thats why I did what I did, because I figured that if anything ever happens to me, all of this, now, will have to stay as it is. And in the basement, I put the kitchen and a dining area and everything. And I renovated the bar, I renovated the other side, my two sisters came to work for me, running the kitchen and the dining room. So after a couple of years going back and forth, his daughter, she decided she wanted to get involved in it. So thats where I got most of the stuff thats here in the house today. Burke of Raquette Lake, New York, who passed away on February 12, 2023, at the age of 31, leaving to mourn family and friends. And it was called SS White [Dental Manufacturing Company]. Id love that old house. I said, But Bess, I said your houseI dont know about saving it. I forgot whose house it was. Q: Was that house that you restored in a similar condition as this house? It makes sense because she was an old lady. Burke: But I forgot what the other two things where. So I went down and I just went around and everything I seenall the stuff you see hanging in this house, most of it come from me going around and wheeling and dealing in, you might as well say, the black market. If you lived in Alaska, where it was always cold, it was fine. And whats going on up the street here now? So here I was with all this stuff, sending it home to my family, sending it to my sisters. And my sister, Bess, she was married to Walter, her husband, who was in the Navy. How the hell they got to the right people, I dont know. And their mansion, the White people that owned SS White, the White family, owned right across the creek, there, where the Captains Quarters [private development] are. He was the husband of the late Diane M. (Marshall) Burke. Burke: Oh, when I was a kid, we lived in Annandale. The developers came in with bulldozersbulldozed that mansion, bulldozed the stables. And I looked back, you could hardly see the house. Obituary George T. Burke, 76, passed away peacefully, from multiple health issues, surrounded by family on February 20, 2022. There was nine of us in the whole family. So, Id do that. Burke: Well, I wanted a beautiful Victorian look. So a couple of days later, I have a dream. They bought a house. People that owned U.S. Steel, their mansion was over there. And I had to laugh. And now the people that I sold it to, the Pistillis [James and Kathleen Pistilli], they had the whole thing researched and now its got landmark things on it and everything. Daller: Oh, yes. Sure, Id no idea of ever owning his house because I had a beautiful big house in Tottenvillebig French style house. I was born right in the hospital across the street, and grew up 90% of my time on Staten Island until I became old enough and I joined the military. So we talked to our brother Bill and he had come up with the money, bought the house. His family was like aristocratic. I dont know, Im just used to it.
